CotF Reaction Corps – The Force Awakens trailer

Here. Watch it again.

In this Reaction Corps episode, the kids and I do a little pre-game warm up and speculation before the moment finally comes.

We stay up too late, watch the full-length trailer for The Force Awakens, sharply intake breath, deeply sigh and then talk all about it until the kids are too tired to stay awake.

It was good fun.

Just let it in (your ears)….

Star Wars Reads Day 2015

IMG_2540Well, another Star Wars Reads Day has come and gone. This year was quite a bit different from last year. First of all, we have a podcast now. Last year, we were spectators and participants. This year … well, we were still spectators and participants, but I got to to tell people we had a podcast.

So that was fun.

Also, this year was author-less. In the past, Troy Denning had spoken at our local Barnes and Noble about his books and Star Wars in general. But he hasn’t written anything since the Legends/Canon announcement, so I guess it makes sense that he wouldn’t be around. Dan Wallace was at the event a couple years ago, but he was at New York ComicCon this year promoting all the stuff he’s been working on lately.

So this year was a little light on the “Reads” portion of Star Wars Reads Day. But it was fun nonetheless. And what made it extra special (and what makes it extra-special every year) were the members of the Wolfpack Squad of the 501st Central Garrison and the Rebel Legion.

Anna was determined to get photos with each and every one of them. So we did.
IMG_2548 IMG_2550 IMG_2552 IMG_2553 IMG_2555 IMG_2558 IMG_2561IMG_2551These men and women are so gracious with their time and so great with kids. A princess should bestow medals upon them at the end of each day they go out.

And B&N had a few activities set up. Not pictured: a build-your-own mini Lego Millennium Falcon.
IMG_2543 IMG_2544 IMG_2545Yes, I did say, “Stay on target. Stay on target.” Of course I did.

Had to get a picture of this Mando gouging out 3PO’s eyes.
IMG_2547All in all, a great Star Wars Reads Day. Maybe we can all gouge out Kylo Ren’s eyes next year!

Episode #14 – The Evil Galactic Underwear

On Episode 14, we’re joined by our neighbor Toby. We have news, reviews a joke and more. It’s an information-and-silliness-packed episode of Children of the Force. Strap in to your acceleration couch and enjoy the ride….

STAR WARSY STUFF [1:50]

We’ve been powering through the Clone Wars lately. We watched the Zygerrian arc, A Friend in Need (the one where Ahsoka beheads five Mandos in a tenth of a second), the Rako Hardeen arc, and the first Darth Maul arc.

I ask the question of whether or not it’s plausible that Obi Wan would so willingly team up with Ventress. He seemed to be really accepting of her help and not worried that she was going to stab him in the back.

We got some Star Wars Mad Libs from friends recently. Anna reads an exceptionally funny one that Liam did (the title of this episode is from that Mad Lib).

And finally, Anna has started Lost Stars! I haven’t even started it yet! It’s the last of the Journey to The Force Awakens books that I have to read. I’ll probably start on it right after I finish Jason Fry’s final Servants of the Empire book, The Secret Academy.

NEWS [13:20]

We play some catch-up this week. We discuss some of the names of The Force Awakens, per that EW story. http://www.ew.com/article/2015/08/12/star-wars-force-awakens-character-names

The Force Awakens soundtrack will be released on the same day as TFA, December 18th.

New books also coming out December 18th! Really looking forward to Before the Awakening and Rey’s Survival Guide.

Check out that amazing interactive video of Rey speeding through the ship graveyard over on Facebook (doesn’t play in Safari, but works in Chrome).

Tickets for The Force Awakens will probably be going on sale in October, per Bobby Roberts over at the Full of Sith. And maybe, hopefully, the first showing will be around 7:00? Please?

CANON NEWS [38:40]

We go through new The Force Awakens starwars.com databank entries. Ton of information in there.

REVIEW [1:02:30]

Episode #13 – New Kids on the Podcast

It’s lucky episode 13, and we have something different for you! Anna and Liam were at school when I picked up my friends’ kids from their school, so we decided to record a podcast without them. Ella, Greta and Nils bring their own personal take on Star Wars to Children of the Force this week, and it’s a great time.

INTRO (Rebels discussion, etc.) [0:20]

NEWS [17:10]

The kids and I watch and talk about the new trailer teaser (which is what I’ve decided to call a trailer for a trailer). And just in case you haven’t seen that yet or want to see it again (and why wouldn’t you?), click on this to see it:

There has been an awakening… #StarWars #TheForceAwakens

If that lightsaber could talk….

And hey, remember that great SDCC behind the scenes video and C-3PO’s red arm? Well, there’s a comic that’s going to explain that. And this is the glorious cover:

Some countries will be screening The Force Awakens before it’s screened here in the United States. Which means we’ll be maintaining radio silence here at the Children of the Force starting on December 15th or so.

CANON NEWS [25:50]

First, an explanation of what we mean by “canon news” for the new kids.

And our canon news for this episode comes to us from Moving Target by Cecil Castellucci and Jason Fry. What is Princess Leia’s title during the sequel era (or at least around the time of The Force Awakens)?

JOKE [31:30]

What did Darth Vader say to Luke Skywalker when he needed help?

REVIEW [33:05]

Ella, Greta and Nils tell me about Jeffrey Brown’s Jedi Academy series. Then I go off on a tangent about speciesism in Star Wars. And then Greta makes an awesome connection to Ahsoka’s and Anakin’s response to Rotta the Hutt in The Clone Wars movie. These kids….

QUESTION & ANSWER COUNCIL [39:45]

Ella: If you could create a droid, what would it look like and what would it do?
Greta: If you could choose one Star Wars character to be your bodyguard, who would you choose?
Nils: If you could have any ship in Star Wars (based mostly on the amount of living space and food it can carry), what ship would it be?
Al: Which was your favorite episode of season 1 of Rebels?

And somewhere in there we start talking about the Empire / First Order (which I repeatedly, mistakenly refer to as the “New Order”) and the Rebels / Resistance.

Episode #12 – So. Much. News. EW and D23

In episode 12 of Children of the Force, we discuss the news that dropped over the last week or so, including all the goodies in Entertainment Weekly and everything that came out of the Disney convention, D23.

Listen, you will…
on iTunes
on Stitcher
on Podbean

First up, and I think possibly the biggest news out of the convention, is that Colin Trevorrow is directing Episode VIII. We discuss what that might mean for Rey’s ovaries. OK, not really. But considering Jurassic World, it wouldn’t surprise me.

At any rate, I go on to discuss a thought I had about the sequel trilogy directors and how they remind me of the original trilogy. It goes like this:

J.J. Abrams is to A New Hope as
Rian Johnson is to The Empire Strikes Back as
Colin Trevorrow is to Return of the Jedi

J.J. Abrams: Old meets new and awesome (Star Trek, Super 8). He’s got that sort of old Hollywood meets new tech vibe, which A New Hope has, as well.

Rian Johnson: Moody, edgy, sad endings (Looper, Brick). His movies are great, but ultimately, they’re downers. The Empire Strikes Back is awesome, fun, but ultimately, sort of depressing.

Colin Trevorrow: Blockbuster / give ’em what they want (Jurassic World). If Jurassic World is any indication, he’s got the sort of whiz-bang mentality and blockbuster acumen that harkens back to the rollicking fun of Return of the Jedi.

These aren’t perfect comparisons, of course, and who knows what the directors will do with these sequel movies. But it’s something fun to think about.

Next, I reveal that sweet Drew Struzan poster to the kids and they freak out.

TFA Poster

We talk about basically everything that this slashfilm article points out …. but before I ever read that article. Great Star Wars minds think alike, they say.

Liam notices that Luke is nowhere to be seen on this poster. He’s having a hard time coming to terms with the idea that Luke Skywalker is not the main character of The Force Awakens. To which Anna replies,

“Liam, the original trilogy is over. A new trilogy has started.”

And as if that wasn’t enough, we also got this stunning Rogue One image.

rogue-one-cast-photo-d23
The kids like this, but they don’t think it looks all that much like Star Wars.

I remind them that Rogue One won’t have any Jedi, to which Liam responds:

“I can’t stand a Star Wars movie without Jedi.”

Related to our discussion last week, we discuss how we Rogue One will be like the prequels: we know how it’s going to end. How does it get there? That will be the fun part.

And how about this Kathleen Kennedy quote from D23?

“It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective….”

Ground war, huh? So …. no Rogue Squadron? This isn’t a movie about X-Wing pilots? Calling the movie Rogue One was actually an epic trolling of fandom? All right, then.

So that was D23. Or at least some highlights. Then we move on to discussing all the information out of Entertainment Weekly.

Click this link to see all those sweet photos we talk about.

finn crashed
This photo of Finn running away from a crashed TIE made Liam think that someone else could be in there. Which ties nicely into these photos:

That’s a two-seater TIE Fighter. Thanks to this image, we know that the TIE we see shooting up the place in the second TFA teaser is facing away from the camera. So what we’re seeing is the back. And it’s gunnin’. Hence, rear gunner.

Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 11.37.41 PM
I am the temporary captain of this ship that George built. -J.J. Abrams

In response to that quote, I wax all philosophical-like about how glad I am that Abrams said it, but that soon it won’t be all that true. I use a quote about a broom from the Dr. Who episode, Deep Breath. It’s a variation of Theseus’ paradox, which is basically the same thing, but with a ship instead of a broom. To wit, if you start with a thing and replace every part of the thing over time, is that thing still the thing you started with?

What I hope happens is that George’s ship is slowly and carefully turned into Lucasfilm’s ship and that the change is so gradual and well-done and it continues to sail so true that we won’t even really notice the change.

I’m skipping over a lot of what we talk about in this episode. There’s just so much news. But one more thing.

On EW.com it’s revealed that Kylo Ren is not the name that Kylo Ren was born with. He came to it later when he joined a group called The Knights of Ren. Liam postulates that the Knights of Ren are actually a good group of people and that Kylo Ren betrays them. This fits with a theory that Liam and I stumbled upon when we looked at this image of a Kylo Ren costume:

Kylo Kid
Liam thought he was looking at Barriss Offee:

Barriss Ren
To which I replied: Huh. Could the Knights of Ren be a group Offee started? We don’t know her fate after The Clone Wars. Could she have escaped the Empire and started a new order of Jedi? One that didn’t call themselves Jedi? Could Kylo Ren’s parents have sent him there to learn the ways of the Force? Could he have betrayed the Knights of Ren once he learned what he needed to know?

Speculating is fun!

Episode #11 – Prequel-era Appreciation AND 2 New Seconds of Footage!

NEWS [10:15]

We talk about that Korean TV spot for The Force Awakens.

Me: It has two seconds of new footage.

Liam: Yay. Let’s pause it and look at it really, really, really closely.

Me: Let’s over-analyze the commercial!

Anna: Yeah!

I love these kids so much.

Anyway, here’s the spot, like you haven’t seen it already:

One last bit of news is that the Star Wars saga is being released on Blu-ray again. Liam notices that two of the covers are not like the others. One isn’t a main character. The other isn’t a bad guy!

CANON NEWS [20:45]

Yellow! It’s a lightsaber color! In the book Dark Disciple, Asajj Ventress has a yellow lightsaber. Where did it come from? Who knows. But it’s yellow.

We discuss that there have been yellow blades in the past, but not on a standard lightsaber. The Jedi temple guards in The Clone Wars had yellow double-bladed lightsaber pikes.

Jedi_Temple_Guard

So sure. Yellow. But look at this image of Ventress from the short story Kindred Spirits in Star Wars Insider #159. Now that’s a lightsaber.

What was your favorite day of Star Wars Prequels Appreciation Week?
What’s your favorite vehicle in the Star Wars prequels?

STAR WARSY STUFF [2:00]

We’re still making our way through the Clone Wars. The three of us watched the first episode of the Krell arc, which is pretty brutal. Liam and I watched the first episode of the Mon Cal arc, which Anna didn’t watch because she is afraid of sharks, and there’s a straight-up shark man in those episodes.

Starwars.com guides for the episodes we watched:
Water War
Darkness on Umbara

Liam’s on the hunt for the R2-D2 Hotwheels. Here’s the side-by-side comparison between the R2 Hotwheels and R2 in a flying car in Princess Leia issue #3:

OK, they’re not that alike. But still … just plain silly.

NEWS [6:30]

Spoiler alert for the Aftermath excerpt that was posted on starwars.com last week. Stop reading now if you want to know absolutely nothing about the book until it comes out.

Anyway, I read the first part of that excerpt in Ackbar’s voice until it became too painful to do so.

Aftermath_Random-House1
Hit this link to read the excerpt for yourself.

And since we didn’t really get a chance to go through the video in our last episode, the kids and I watch and react to the behind the scenes reel that was released at San Diego ComicCon. We talk about motion-capture puppetry, practical effects, explosions, aliens and all manner of Star Warsiness. Here’s the video, in case you haven’t seen it:

We also talk about the appendix that was added to Star Wars: The Essential Atlas.

And then, because this news segment wasn’t already long enough, we insert a quiz into it. The kids and I take a quiz recently posted on starwars.com, How Well Do You Know Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. We kick butt.

Oh. Hey. Michael Jackson wanted to be Jar Jar Binks.

And to round off the LONGEST NEWS SEGMENT EVER, we talk about leaks and spoilers in the abstract.

CANON NEWS [50:50]

Exactly who was Ventress given to when she was an infant?

JOKE [54:40]

You want to hear us sing, right? Well, here you go. A song about shooting Greedo to the tune of On the Road Again.

REVIEW [56:40]

The Princess Leia mini-comic has come to a close. We discuss issue #5 and the series as a whole. Anna gives a dramatic reading of the speech Leia gives toward the end of the issue. We didn’t give it a grade, but as you can hear, we all really liked it.

Liam sees an ad for the Lando mini-series at the end of the book and laments that we’re not buying that one. He wants to buy it because “Lando’s awesome and good at shooting and stuff.” To which Anna sighs and I laugh.

Well that’s all, Star Wars folks. Until next time…

ALDERAAN SURVIVES!

CotF Reaction Corps – Rebels: Season 1 and Siege of Lothal

You get a double-whammy this time around. We’ve been meaning to record a Rebels: Season 1 episode ever since the finale aired. Alas, places to go, people to see, other episodes to record…

So here we are talking about season 1 of Rebels on Siege-of-Lothal-morning (which is like Christmas morning, but better). And then, a few days later, we recorded our reaction to The Siege of Lothal.

Listen, you will…
0n iTunes
on Stitcher
on Podbean

Our reaction to The Siege of Lothal starts at the 44 minute mark, which is right around half way through the episode. That’s right. This episode is over an hour and a half long, which makes it our longest episode yet by over half an hour.

This one took me a long time to edit. Liam had a lot to say, much of which, sadly, ended up on the cutting room floor. But there’s still plenty in there. I couldn’t bring myself to cut all of the ridiculousness out.

Also, summer. This summer has been great, aside from Anna breaking her arm.

IMG_1486
I was certain I’d have more time to record, edit and publish this summer, but so far that hasn’t panned out. Oh well. Swimming and soccer and other fun stuff are good, too.

Anyway, back to the episode. The kids really loved season 1 of Rebels. Here’s an exchange that illustrates this love:

Me: If they do some other kind of show after Rebels – maybe Rebels is only going to go three or four seasons, we don’t know–

Anna: Waa.

Me: But whatever they do after that, I have full–

Liam: I hope it keeps going for seasons like the whole rest … until the universe blows up.

Me: Until the universe blows up. Wow, that would be a long time.

Liam: Well, until the earth blows up.

Me: OK. So you want there to be hundreds of millions of seasons of Rebels.

Liam: Um, until I’m dead.

Me: Oh, until you’re dead. Oh, OK. Because after you’re dead, who cares.

Liam: Until the whole earth blows up. But still, I’ll get all of it for my whole life except the rest. But I’ll be dead, so I won’t care if I don’t watch the rest. Because I’ll be dead, I can’t think.

Agreed, Liam. Agreed.

We all thought The Siege of Lothal was great, though I think all of us agreed that there was something just a bit less magical about it. The kids don’t count The Empire Strikes Back as one of their favorite Star Wars installments, and seeing how both Filoni and Kinberg have said that S2 of Rebels will have more of an Empire tone, it makes sense that they might feel just a little let down by that. But on the flip side, I think the story of Rebels is taking a pretty serious turn and is going to tell some fairly complex stories in season 2. In this way, my hope is that the kids can see the value in that, even if it might not be fist-pumpinly awesome and fun at every turn (because seriously, Empire is sort of a drag).

Don’t get me wrong, we all loved this episode and cannot wait to see what the rest of the season brings. More exciting than the answers we might get, are the new questions we can ask. Like:

Who’s your favorite Inquisitor?
Did any other clones survive Order 66?
Who’d win in a fight, Vader or every other living Force user in the galaxy all at once?

So much fun. Thanks for reading and listening! Send us a voicemail or email us at forcechildren@gmail.com if you want to take part in the discussion or just give us some feedback.

The Chances of Chewie in Rebels

Today, the kids and I watched Padawan Lost and Wookiee Hunt, the final two episodes of season 3 of The Clone Wars. I watched these episodes a long time ago, and never revisited them. I remember that I liked them, but I didn’t think they were amazing.

The first thing that struck me about these episodes upon re-viewing was the prominence of Ahsoka’s Theme. This original work by Kevin Kiner is probably my favorite piece of non-Williams Star Wars music. The fist time hearing it in Padawan Lost, I was instantly transported to the final scene of season 1 of Rebels, when Ahsoka is revealed as Fulcrum and meets the crew of The Ghost.

The second thing that really hit home was that here was Ahsoka realizing she could fend for herself. These two episodes more than any other (excluding the final arc of season 5), show us proof that Ahsoka is great enough to endure beyond Order 66. Indeed, the skill and capability she shows while being hunted by Trandoshans in these two episodes will no doubt come in handy a few short years later when all force users are being hunted down by the Empire.

Unfeeling pristine white armor, blood-thirsty Trandoshan scales … six of one, half a dozen of the other, really.

This is where the fun begins. At the beginning of the second episode in this arc, Ahsoka meets a Wookiee named Chewbacca. This is during the Clone Wars, of course, so we know that Chewie is going to live because not only will he eventually become the trusty co-pilot of a certain YT-1300, but before all that, he’ll fight alongside Yoda and Tarfful on Kashyyyk.

What about Chewie’s time though, between Kashyyyk and meeting Han Solo? The Legends continuity has plenty to offer on this time period, but as far as canon is concerned, it’s a blank slate (no, his life-debt to Han Solo is not canon).

In Spark of Rebellion, the premiere of Rebels, the Ghost crew liberates a group of Wookiees from a life of slavery on Kessel with the help of tag-a-long Ezra who becomes a crew member shortly thereafter. Who could forget lovable Kitwarr?

Kitwarr

Anyway, Sabine translates Kitwarr’s dad, Wulffwarro, saying that if they ever need help, the Wookiees will be there. Could Chewie be one of those Wookiees who come to help the Rebles in the future? Because you don’t write a line like that unless you’re planning on Wookiees showing up again.

A friend of mine insists that Han Solo will appear on Rebels. As indifferent as I am to the idea (and if I’m being honest, I sort of hope it doesn’t happen), I think he might be right. Could we see the meeting of Chewbacca and Han Solo in Rebels? How many years were they together before A New Hope? Four sounds right to me…

And now there’s someone in Rebels who knows Chewie personally. Ahsoka has contacts all over the galaxy, in fact. Think of the variety of folks she worked with during the Clone Wars (Hondo, anyone?). Like many of those relationships, her friendship with Chewbacca was forged in a desperate, life-threatening situation. Not only does she trust him, but she knows he’s a valuable asset. Like Rex, Gregor and Wolffe, one would think Ahsoka could call on Chewie if she needed some help.

Screen Shot 2015-07-03 at 9.41.06 PM
It seems to me that the there’s an avalanche of possibilities tumbling toward the inevitability of Chewbacca showing up in Rebels. My feelings on this are similar to my feelings about Han showing up. Meh. But if they do it right, then: Yay.

The Clone Wars showed us quite definitively, that an animated Chewbacca can encapsulate all the charm, threat and indomitability of his movie-screen counterpart. And considering that Zeb is based on an original design for Chewbacca, there could either be a great friendship there, or a fun rivalry. Even for a Lasat though, it would be wise not to upset this Wookiee.

NEWS [7:20]

On June 7th, Christopher Lee died at age 93. While it’s true that he was much more than his acting credits, just click on over to IMDB and marvel at how many movies Lee was in. We recently posted a comical viral-website-esque tribute to Christopher Lee on his 93rd birthday. It’s absurd, but I thought I’d link to it here anyway: 7 things Christopher Lee doesn’t know about you. Number 5 will blow your mind!

We discuss the name reveal of Supreme Leader Snoke and just who this Snoke character could be.

Our Snoke talk leads into a discussion about motion capture. I mention a video of Andy Serkis as Cesar the chimpanzee in the Planet of the Apes movie. This video does a really good job illustrating how it works, without getting technical.

Next, we get really excited about Star Wars: Uprising. Maybe too excited. But just watch this video and try not to smile:

And we briefly talk about this Gary Whitta tweet and what it could mean for a Rebels/Rogue One crossover.

CANON NEWS [22:00]

There are “horror holos” in the galaxy far, far away. This is revealed in the short story, Rebel Bluff, which appeared in Star Wars Insider #158 with the line, “The gangster gave Lando a sharp-toothed smile that could have made him a star in a horror holo.”

So there you go. The holonet broadcasts not only news, but also horror movies and probably comedies and action flicks, too. Huh.

JOKE [25:15]

REVIEW [26:50]

We review Princess Liea issues #3 and #4! We break down the story of each issue and discuss things like R2-D2 Hot Wheels, foodie monsters, and the potential for uninterrogated sexism in comics perception and reception among Star Wars fans.

Ahem.

We give these two issues ratings, and the rating for issue #4 is an absurd rating (on a scale of Star Wars aliens) in honor of one of my new favorite podcasts, the Expanded Comicsverse. One of the reasons I love this podcast so much is that I just can’t justify purchasing four comics a month on a regular basis. So far, the only ones we’re keeping up with are Leia (which ends next month) and Kanan: The Last Padawan (because: awesome). So the fact that the Expanded Comicsverse discusses and analyzes the plot of each comic helps to keep me up to date (and yearn for the trade paperbacks even more). You can find the Expanded Comicsverse on the Expanded Fandomverse feed at iTunes and other pod catchers. Check it out.

QUESTION & ANSWER COUNCIL [48:00]

What is your favorite alien species?
If you could be one Jedi, who would you be?

BONUS

Identify the animal making noise in the background and you’ll get a mention and maybe some sort of song dedicated to you (or something) on our next episode!

Next week, we’ll have our double feature episode, a Reaction Corps retrospective on Rebels season 1 and a reaction to the TV movie that kicks off season 2, The Siege of Lothal. Should be fun!
