STAR WARSY STUFF [0:35]

I purchased Empire vs. Rebellion, the card game from Fantasy Flight Games over the weekend. It seems pretty fun, but we haven’t had a chance to play a proper game yet.

We’re really excited for the Battlefront Outer Rim expansion over here. Can’t wait to tear apart Jabba’s palace.

Refer to Episode 19: Rated F for Fun for discussion about video game and movie ratings and why we don’t always follow their suggestions.

We bought Star Wars: The Force Awakens Head-to-Head at the kids’ book fair.

It’s a really fun (and at times, quite funny) book that really gets the creative juices flowing. Unfortunately, this book isn’t available to purchase online yet, as far as I can tell. Hopefully it will be soon.

NEWS [9:45]

Catalyst: A Rogue One Story (or as I like to call it, Star Wars: Catalyst: A Rogue One: A Star Wars Story … Story) is going to come out in October and will be a prequel to the movie. No more information on it besides that, but we wonder whether or not this is where we’ll see some characters from Rebels (since we’re pretty sure they won’t be in the film at all).
A three-issue Rogue One comic miniseries is also coming out in advance of the film, in addition to a Rogue One one-shot. No official word on whether or not these will be prequels too, but the general consensus is that they will be.

Claudia Grey announced that there will be one Lost Stars character making an appearance in Bloodline.

bloodline
Speaking of Bloodline, there are some new blurbs out there about the book.

The Del Rey blurb:

WITNESS THE BIRTH OF THE RESISTANCE

When the Rebellion defeated the Empire in the skies above Endor, Leia Organa believed it was the beginning to a lasting peace. But after decades of vicious infighting and partisan gridlock in the New Republic Senate, that hope seems like a distant memory.

Now a respected senator, Leia must grapple with the dangers that threaten to cripple the fledgling democracy—from both within and without. Underworld kingpins, treacherous politicians, and Imperial loyalists are sowing chaos in the galaxy. Desperate to take action, senators are calling for the election of a First Senator. It is their hope that this influential post will bring strong leadership to a divided galaxy.

As the daughter of Darth Vader, Leia faces with distrust the prospect of any one person holding such a powerful position—even when supporters suggest Leia herself for the job. But a new enemy may make this path Leia’s only option. For at the edges of the galaxy, a mysterious threat is growing. . . .

A blurb from the Aftermath paperback:

An entire generation has flourished during an era of peace. The New Republic, governed by the Galactic Senate on Hosnian Prime, has held power for more than two decades. The wars that divided the galaxy are fading into legend.

Yet conflict has begun to take shape within the Senate. Two unofficial but powerful factions have formed – the Populists, who believe individual planets should retain almost all authority, and the Centrists, who favor a stronger galactic government and a more powerful military.

As this political gridlock threatens to cripple the fledgling democracy, Centrist leaders have called for the election of a “First Senator.” It is their hope that this powerful position will bring order to the divided Senate. But populists like Senator Leia Organa Solo know all too well the price of such order. Even as the election nears, the divisions between the worlds of the galaxy are growing wider…

Oh hey, check out this cover for the comic adaptation of The Force Awakens:

TFA-1-cover-marvel

I hesitate to even put this image on the website because I really don’t like it. Ugh.

Anna and Liam, on the other hand, really like it. I get really negative and then we agree to disagree.

We discuss this interview of Daisy Ridley and how we made the same joke a month before she made it at the Oscars. Geek minds think alike! Also, she confirms that Episode VIII will begin the same way that Episode VII ended.

CANON NEWS [39:35]

“URoRRuR’R’R” is the name of the Tusken Raider who knocked Luke unconscious in A New Hope. We also find out (via Pablo Hidalgo himself (via twitter)) whether or not Tuskens are human, as stated in The Force Awakens Head-to-Head.

JOKE [43:30]

Q&A COUNCIL [45:15]

STAR WARSY STUFF [1:45]

On Anna’s day home sick from school, we watched Padme’s deleted scenes from Revenge of the Sith. And then we watched “Within and Minute,” which is a great documentary that details all the people who work on a movie and what they do. Anna really loved it.

I’m not a huge behind-the-scenes guy, so we haven’t watched any Star Wars documentaries. But given how much Anna loved this one, we might have to watch more soon.

Oh hey look! I found the documentary online. Check it out:

We’re continuing our trek through the Clone Wars. We’ve recently watched the D-Squad arc and the Maul/Deathwatch arc. Two arcs that could not be more different. D-Squad was inanity and droids, where the Maul episodes were despair and murder.

We were not as wowed by “Shroud of Darkness” (the Rebels episode) as most people were. I realize as we’re talking that I think it’s because the episode didn’t have much of a story. It advanced the overall story of the series, but it was not much of a story itself.

LISTENER FEEDBACK [16:00]

We got a great voicemail from Asher and an email from Chris from Star Wars Kidscast. And we talk about the hilarious ad he made for a show inspired by our discussion of Zeb and Kallus in “The Honorable Ones.”

NEWS [20:50]

J.J. says there’s no reason a LGBT character wouldn’t appear in an upcoming Star Wars movie. We applaud him and discuss why we talk about things like this on the podcast and why we speak up about representation, diversity and equality.

We know now that Chewie is going to be in the Han Solo standalone. Maybe not a big surprise, but good to know. And this news brings up the fact that Lumpy, Chewbacca’s son, is on the brink of canon. According to The Princess, The Scoundrel and The Farmboy, Chewbacca has a wife

Speaking of Chewie, there’s a Han Solo comic coming up.

Han-Solo-comic-01-ew

Also speaking of Chewie (wow, I didn’t realize how much Chewie was in this news segment until just now): J.J. Abrams addresses the perceived snub that Leia gives Chewie in The Force Awakens.

We don’t talk about the Lego Star Wars: The Freemakers. At least not yet.

Finally, we discuss the behind the scenes tidbits coming out of South By Southwest, where J.J. Abrams played shuffleboard next to a good friend of mine for 25 minutes. We discuss the revelation that Snoke was targeting and corrupting Ben from an early age. Which brings up an important question:

Can we blame Kylo Ren for who he is and what he did?

CANON NEWS [36:35]

Q&A COUNCIL
[48:10]

Our two questions this week come from Chris from Star Wars Kidscast:

What is your favorite kind of Star Wars alien?
Who is your favorite kid in a Star Wars movie/show?

STUMP THE LUMP! [53:30]

The kids ask me to list the military ranks in the Resistance. And I get a bonus point if I list them in order.

Reaction Corps – Rebels: The Honorable Ones

Reaction Corps was lost for a while to that Great Pit of Carkoon known as the whirlwind lead-up and post-show glory-basking of The Force Awakens.

kithabadeath-83.gif

But just like Boba Fett (probably) (but actually probably not), Reaction Corps has jet-packed itself free from the slimy maw of the all-powerful Sarlacc.

What was the impetus for this great escape? The brilliance known as “The Honorable Ones” on Star Wars: Rebels. “The Legend of the Lasat” was almost enough to pull us out, though. In fact, we basically did a mini Reaction Corps on episode #27: Happabore Backwash, complete with a music cue and everything.

Give it a listen…

Anyway, since it had been a while, we first did a quick re-cap of season 2 so far. Then we dove right into the intricacies of The Honorable Ones.

We talk about the construction modules around Geonosis and how they bear a striking resemblance to Ralph McQuarrie’s concept art for the Death Star(s) II. Here are the two images that I showed the kids.

honorable ones mcquarrie

Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 1.37.44 PM.png

It’s this strange sort of visual cannibalism that I really appreciate: Concept art for Death Star II becomes the construction modules that helped make Death Star I. Cool.

As we discuss the episode, questions arise:

How did the Empire know the Rebels were coming?

Just how common is the word “sleemo” in that galaxy far, far away?

Why doesn’t the Geonosian queen from the Vader comic show up on their bio scans?

This one:

Geonosian_Factory_Queen

Maybe she wasn’t on the planet at the time? She was one of the few Geonosians who weren’t on Geonosis when the “sterilization” took place? She returned the lone surviving Geonosian and, in desperation, tried to mechanically recreate her species? These are questions to which we may never have the answers. But it’s fun to think about.

Was it weird to see Kallus and Zeb just sitting there talking to each other? Did it make sense?

We get pretty deep into who Zeb and Kallus honored in this episode. It’s true that they’re honorable to each other and themselves, but what about the factions they belong to? Is Zeb honoring his Rebel friends when he doesn’t take Kallus into custody? Does Kallus honor his vow to serve the Empire when he doesn’t kill the rebel Zeb?

This personal reconciliation between enemies could have drastic effects down the road. What will happen the next time Zeb and Kallus meet? What will happen if their respective factions find out what they did (or didn’t do, in this case)? But on the positive side, could Kallus become an informant on the Empire? Could he join the Rebels?

This is the point in the episode where I play a clip from our very first Reaction Corps episode, where I consider the possibility of Kallus defecting and joining the rebels. We play a clip of that to make me feel good about myself.

Why does Admiral Constantine disregard Kallus at the end? What will his life in the Empire be like now? Why does he keep the meteorite?

Final question: Could Kallus and Zeb both leave their factions and have their own odd couple adventures?

He’s a neat freak who’s a stickler for the rules. He’s a shedding Lasat who likes to put his feet up. Coming this fall to ABC Family, it’s Imp and the Lasat.

Only five more episodes left in season 2!

STAR WARSY STUFF [0:35]

After having to return and check it out from the library a few times, Anna finally finished Lost Stars. She desperately wants a sequel, which I think means she liked it. Liam isn’t sure if he wants to read it if there’s no sequel. I’m not sure if Liam’s ready for it thematically. But he could probably handle it.

Liam helped buy this 2nd grade Star Wars math workbook for himself. He says it’s challenging and fun.

2nd grade math

We started watching the D-Squad arc of The Clone Wars. The kids think it’s pretty funny so far.

gasgon
We also talk about not being able to talk about Rogue One.

NEWS [10:05]

We’re getting a The Force Awakens comic adaptation, written by Chuck Wendig. Anna wants it to follow the movie exactly. I’m hoping it expands the story.

We discuss opening crawls and whether or not Ep. VIII will have one. If it opens where VII left off, then it probably won’t. Anna would be really mad. Liam doesn’t care. I’m thinking maybe they could just have one at the beginning of each trilogy.

CANON NEWS [17:55]

This week’s canon news is about Poe’s history as a pilot and the state of his family.

JOKE [23:00]

Q&A COUNCIL [24:10]

First, we get some commentary and answers from last week’s Q&A Council from Nick (who submitted the questions for last week’s episode). Nick also gives us his theory that Boba Fett will be the main villain from Rogue One. We spin the email off into a couple questions for the Council.

1. Will Luke fight in Episode VIII?
2. If you could choose one preexisting Star Wars character to be in Rogue One, who would it be?

STUMP THE LUMP! [33:55]

LISTENER FEEDBACK [4:35]

We get a great birthday voicemail from @torpedoted13!

And we read an email from Nick, Sylvia and Sarah from London! They have some great theories that we discuss, including the Rey-as-reincarnated-Anakin theory and the Snoke-as-Vader theory.

NEWS [21:25]

Jedi News reports that there might be a Force Friday for Rogue One on September 30th.

Anna’s not really excited for Rogue One, but that might change when we see the first teaser? We’ll see…
And of course, we got that really cool production teaser for Episode VIII:

As if that wasn’t enough, we got information about new and returning cast.

Benecio Del Toro! Who I assume will not look anything like this:

1280-collector.jpg

Laura Dern! Who I’m so happy is in Star Wars, because it means someone made this:

Laura Dern.jpg
We also discuss who’s absent from the announcement (Peter Mayhew, Billy Dee Williams, Hayden Christiansen, Ewan McGregor) and why that might be.

CANON NEWS [44:40]
Starkiller Base is not that kyber-crystal-rich planet we thought it might be.

JOKE [46:05]

What did Admiral Ackbar say when he went to the bathroom? (No, it’s not what you think … or is it?)

Q&A COUNCIL [47:45]

Our questions today come from Nick, Sylvia and Sarah!

-What is your favourite trilogy? Original, prequel or sequel?
-Who do you think Rey’s parents are?
-Will Finn die in Episode VIII? (the kids were aghast at this question and emphatically said no, willing their words to be true)

STUMP THE LUMP [54:25]

STAR WARSY STUFF [1:05]

Weekend X-Wing games are becoming a regular thing in our house. Here’s a time-lapse video of one of the games we played last weekend.

Anna stopped reading Rey’s Survival Guide because she felt that Rey was being too negative. Liam sort of agrees, but doesn’t think that’s reason enough to stop reading the book. Personally, I’m loving Rey’s Survival Guide so far and think the tone makes sense.

We’ve all now read the Jedi Academy trilogy and loved it.

We read a great listener email in this episode, which includes these theories:
1. Is Kylo Ren a playing a long con on Snoke?
2. Is that Unkar Plutt holding Rey’s hand in her force-vision-flashback (aka: forceback)?
3. Is Snoke Darth Palgueis?

We also get into a spoiler-free discussion about two episodes of Rebels, “The Protector of Concord Dawn” and “Legends of the Lasat,” including a listen to “Journey Into the Star Cluster,” one of Kevin Kiner’s finest pieces of music.

legends-lasat_92_9dbc9778
Our discussion of “Legends of the Lasat” also includes ruminations on Ashla, the Lasat interpretation of the Force (and an ooooold idea straight from the mind of George Lucas).

The updated DK Star Wars Character Guide is coming soon! Given that this book only has 200 entries, we have to conclude that there will be no Rebels or Clone Wars characters included in it. I would love for DK to release a deluxe edition some day with every single character in it. Maybe a box set?

Lego is at it again, with The Force Awakens video game.

We’re looking forward to playing this one, though we’re a little surprised the whole game will focus on TFA, since in the past, games have focused on multiple movies or multiple seasons of Clone Wars. At any rate, it’s sure to be completely awesome.

CANON NEWS [34:10]

BB-8 speaks in 27th generation droidspeak!

He also usually has a transmitter, but it was accidentally disabled before the mission that led Poe to Lor San Tekka.

Q&A COUNCIL [37:50]

Who is your favorite background character from the seven current movies?
Who is your favorite character in The Empire Strikes Back?

I go on a tangent about consent in Star Wars. When Han is holding Leia’s hand in the Falcon in The Empire Strikes Back, she says, “Stop that,” twice. I tell the kids (for the umpteenth time) that Han should have let go at that point. You don’t keep holding someone’s hand like that after they tell you to stop.

STUMP THE LUMP [46:35]

Liam and I have also been working through the trade paperbacks of the new Marvel comics. So far, we’re read Star Wars and Vader. We already read the Leia comic, because we bought that one as it came out. Same with Shattered Empire. Up next: Lando.

We’re also reading through the Jedi Academy books and they’re almost done with those (actually, by the time I’m writing this, we already finished them!).

I finished Before the Awakening and really liked it. Go read it if you haven’t already.

NEWS [2:40]

Gwendoline Christie has confirmed that she will be reprising her role of Captain Phasma in Episode VIII: Phasma’s Revenge. And fandom breathes a collective sigh of relief.

CANON NEWS [4:15]

Snoke (and Kylo Ren, if Kylo Ren is to be believed) exalt Vader, except that part where he didn’t kill his son and instead allowed the Empire to be destroyed. They know about that and they disagree with it. (But a small part of me believes that Kylo Ren actually plans to do something similar much later down the road … which we’ll get into next week).

At any rate, in order to illustrate this canon news, Anna and I do a dramatic reading of the part of the TFA novelization which directly mentions this “momentary lapse” of judgment on Vader’s part.  My hoarse voice makes a decent Snoke, especially with the pitch lowered a little bit.

I went to The Force Awakens in real IMAX and left the kids behind for my 4th viewing. This caused me to have some new observations and thoughts about the movie. We discuss:
-The reflection of Rey in BB-8’s eye.
-Kylo Ren ran away from Han until he couldn’t anymore.
-Does Kylo already have a new mask, of a sort?
-3PO’s golden arm.
-Had Luke been crying?

Liam and I both had a birthday. I got Fantasy Flight Games’ X-Wing! Liam got Disney Infinity with Anakin and Ahsoka!

NEWS [26:50]

The release date for Episode VIII has moved seven months further away. We all agree that this is probably for the best.

Anna thinks VIII will be called “Luke’s Return.” Liam thinks it will be called, “Luke Never Grabs the Lightsaber.” But of course, neither of them actually think that.

Poe Dameron gets a comic, and the first cover is a thing of beauty. We’re so looking forward to this thing. And oh my gosh, I just noticed that there’s an A-Wing on the cover! In the episode, we mention the possibility of Poe meeting up with his mom and/or dad. What if he meets up with his mom and she flies a mission with him?! How cool would that be? [edit: I’m just now reading the Poe story in Before the Awakening…]

poe comic

From the USA Today story: The series will dig into Poe’s status as the top X-wing fighter jockey for General Leia Organa and leader of a squadron with an important mission. But the evil First Order also has a goal of finding Luke, and a new villain from the organization is introduced as Poe’s chief nemesis.

We also discuss the upcoming junior reader book series, Adventures in Wild Space. Not much is known about this series yet, but here are the three cover images that have been released:

And the blurb:

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….

When the parents of Milo and Lina Graf are abducted by agents of the evil Empire, the children must undertake a perilous journey across the unknown reaches of Wild Space to rescue them – and to discover hope for the future.

There’s a petition to bring George Lucas back for Episode IX. It’s a nice thought, but it ain’t going to happen. But this leads to a discussion of whether or not The Force Awakens and Rebels are missing anything since they’re missing The Maker.

Hasbro keeps putting the “bro” in Hasbro. The kids’ righteous indignation is right on target. Hasbro needs to do better. Disney needs to demand better. J.J. Abrams agrees:

“I will say that it seems preposterous and wrong that the main character of the movie is not well represented in what is clearly a huge piece of the Star Wars world in terms of merchandizing. […] I read that she wasn’t in the Monopoly game and was quickly making phone calls about this because if it were true — and it is true, and now Hasbro, of course, has said they’re going to put Rey in — it doesn’t quite make sense why she wouldn’t be there. She’s somewhat important in the story.”
